Artist's Biography

Artist's Statement

The majority of my paintings are landscapes, and seascapes painted outside on location. However, I also work in the studio. Nature is my inspiration and has been my number one teacher. The more I look at my subject, the more I see. In my work, I attempt to capture the essence of what IS, for just that slice of time. It is an emotional interpretation of what it feels like to be at that place, at that particular time. I try to capture the energy I sense in my scene and infuse my paintings with that feeling of liveliness or being in order to share and spread the feeling of joy, awe and wonder.

In addition to the emotional appeal, I aspire to create a piece of work that is technically interesting through brush marks, texture, and harmonious color. Putting together values, shapes and spots of color is endlessly fascinating and challenging. When all of these elements come together effectively then I feel I have succeeded. My desire is that my interpretation is as entertaining to the viewer as it was for me to create it.

Background

I grew up in the countryside of Pennsylvania. As a child I was allowed the freedom to explore the creek and forest near my house. I loved being out in nature, and so entertainment was usually activities such as fishing, swimming, boating, biking, studying the stars, hunting for turtle eggs, ice skating, sledding, and listening to crickets. My mother helped instill in me the idea of responsibility of my own entertainment, self-education and happiness. I believe this helped me to look within for ideas and assisted in my creative development.

At 21 I moved to California where other relatives were. While working, I put myself through college and earned my Business Administration degree. Afterwards I continued my education, working towards an art degree. However, my plans were interrupted and I had to wait until life's circumstances later gave me the opportunity to finally allocate dedicated time with my art and become professional. I continue to educate myself by frequently going to museums, art walks, studying and critiquing, conversing with other artists and reading most days. Currently the artists I admire and study independently are Clyde Aspevig, Matt Smith, and Scott Christensen.
